Why Bali works for couples

Bali works because it changes character every hour you drive. Ubud in the centre is terraced, humid and green, with temples that are still working temples and villas that back onto river valleys. An hour and a half south, Uluwatu drops into limestone cliffs above a serious surf break.

For couples, the standard shape is three nights inland followed by three or four on the coast. It gives you the spa-and-waterfall half of Bali and the sunset-and-seafood half without repacking more than once.

Private pool villas are unusually good value here compared with anywhere else in the region, which is why so many honeymoons include one even when the rest of the trip is modest.

What couples do here

  • Ubud's rice terraces and temple mornings
  • Uluwatu's cliffs at sunset
  • Nusa Penida and the offshore islands
  • Balinese cooking and offering-making with a family

When to visit Bali

The dry season brings warm days, low humidity and clear sunsets over the Indian Ocean. November to March is wetter but greener, with rain that usually arrives in the afternoon and clears by evening.

  • Apr – JunidealDry, green and quieter than the July peak.
  • Jul – AuggoodBest weather of the year and the busiest crowds.
  • Sep – OctidealWarm, dry and noticeably calmer. The local favourite.
  • Nov – MarshoulderWet season. Lush landscapes, softer pricing.

      Common questions

      Bali, answered

Is Bali good for a honeymoon or is it too busy?
It depends entirely on where you stay. Seminyak and Canggu are lively; Ubud, Sidemen, Amed and the Uluwatu clifftops are quiet. A well-planned Bali honeymoon avoids the crowded strip almost completely.
How many nights do we need in Bali?
Six to eight. Three nights inland and three to five on the coast covers the island properly. Anything under five nights means spending a disproportionate share of the trip in the car.
Should we add the Gili Islands or Nusa Penida?
Nusa Penida is a long, bumpy day trip and best done as an overnight. The Gilis add a genuine beach-island stretch and pair well if you have ten nights or more.
