Europe
Rome for the ruins, the coast for the rest
A first Italian trip is usually Rome, Florence and the Amalfi coast, and it is usually two days too short in each.
Rome needs three nights, Florence two, and the Amalfi coast at least three if you want a day that is not a bus. Trains between the cities are fast and cheap; the coast is where a private driver stops being a luxury and starts being the only sane option.
Warm, open and without the August heat or the August prices.
