North India
High desert, higher passes
A cold desert at 3,500 metres, with monasteries on the ridgelines and roads that cross passes higher than most European summits.
Everything here is governed by altitude. Two nights in Leh doing very little is not a wasted start — it is what makes the rest of the trip possible. Beyond that: the Indus valley monasteries, Nubra over Khardung La, and Pangong for one night, not three.
The passes are open and the nights are cold rather than freezing.

Give the first two days away
Acclimatisation is not optional, and altitude sickness ends trips.
Carry cash
Mobile data and card machines both stop working past Leh.
