Santorini Caldera Honeymoon

A cave suite on the rim, a catamaran afternoon and the sunset everyone else queues for

About this trip

Santorini rewards staying in the right place more than almost anywhere else. A rim suite in Imerovigli costs what it does because the view is the room, and once you are there you barely leave it before evening.

We put Athens at the start rather than the end. Two nights of the Acropolis, the Plaka and a rooftop dinner gives the trip somewhere to arrive from, and the ferry or flight down to the island feels like an event.

Sunsets are watched from Imerovigli, not Oia — same light, a tenth of the crowd. Oia is visited mid-morning instead, when the tour boats have not yet docked.

  • Four nights in a caldera-rim cave suite with a private plunge pool
  • Two nights in central Athens with an early Acropolis entry
  • Private catamaran afternoon around the hot springs and red beach
  • Assyrtiko tasting at a vineyard inland
  • Sunset dinner above the caldera
  • Early morning walk from Fira to Oia along the rim path

Day by day

A working outline rather than a fixed schedule. Every day can be moved, and at least one is deliberately left empty.

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Arrive Athens

Transfer to a hotel in the centre. If there is evening left, the Plaka is a fifteen-minute walk and the Acropolis is lit from almost every rooftop in it.

    • Private airport transfer

    Stay: Central Athens hotel

  2. 2

    Day 2

    The Acropolis, early

Guided entry at opening, before the heat and the coach groups. The rest of the day is open — the new museum is ten minutes away and worth the afternoon.

    • Early-entry Acropolis tour
    • Acropolis Museum nearby

    Meals: breakfastStay: Central Athens hotel

  3. 3

    Day 3

    Down to the island

A short domestic flight to Santorini, then a transfer up to the caldera rim. Check in and stay put — the first evening on the terrace is the one people remember.

    • Domestic flight
    • Caldera-rim check-in

Meals: breakfastStay: Imerovigli cave suite with plunge pool

  4. 4

    Day 4

    Catamaran afternoon

Out from the south of the island past the red and white beaches, stopping at the hot springs. Lunch is cooked on board and the boat turns back with the sun behind it.

    • Private catamaran
    • Hot springs swim
    • Lunch on board

Meals: breakfast, lunchStay: Imerovigli cave suite with plunge pool

  5. 5

    Day 5

Oia in the morning, vineyards after

Oia early, before the day boats. Then inland to a vineyard for an Assyrtiko tasting — the vines here are trained in baskets on the ground against the wind, which is worth seeing.

    • Oia before the crowds
    • Assyrtiko vineyard tasting

Meals: breakfastStay: Imerovigli cave suite with plunge pool

  6. 6

    Day 6

The rim path and a long dinner

The Fira to Oia path in the cool of the morning if you want it — about three hours along the caldera edge. In the evening, dinner at a table above the volcano as the light goes.

    • Caldera rim walk
    • Sunset dinner for two

Meals: breakfast, dinnerStay: Imerovigli cave suite with plunge pool

  7. 7

    Day 7

    Fly home

Breakfast on the terrace, then a transfer to Santorini airport for the connection home.

    Meals: breakfast

Questions about this trip

Why watch the sunset from Imerovigli rather than Oia?
Same caldera, same light, a fraction of the crowd. Oia at sunset means standing shoulder to shoulder for an hour beforehand. We visit it mid-morning instead.
Do we need a Schengen visa?
Yes, for Indian passport holders. Allow six to eight weeks. We provide confirmed bookings, the itinerary and a covering letter for the application.
Should we add another island?
If you have nine nights or more, Milos or Naxos adds the beaches Santorini does not really have. Under that, Athens plus Santorini is the better-balanced trip.

Before you go

Best time to visit Santorini

May, June, September and October. The shoulder months give warm sea, long evenings and a fraction of the July crowding. High summer is hot and extremely busy; winter sees many caldera hotels close entirely.
