A Maldives honeymoon itinerary that does not waste a day

Seaplane or speedboat, water villa or beach villa, half board or all-inclusive — the four decisions that determine what a Maldives honeymoon costs and how it feels.

A Maldives honeymoon has very few moving parts, which is exactly why the four decisions you do make matter so much. Get them right and the trip costs a third less than most couples expect.

Decision one: seaplane or speedboat

This is the big one. A seaplane transfer is spectacular and adds a significant per-person cost, and it only flies in daylight — which means a late arrival into Malé can force an unplanned airport hotel night. A speedboat resort costs less, runs at any hour and puts you on the island within an hour.

If the seaplane is the part you have been imagining for years, book it and plan your flights around it. If it is not, a speedboat resort in North or South Malé Atoll gives you the same lagoon for meaningfully less.

Decision two: split the villa

The best-value structure for a five-night stay is two nights in a beach villa with a pool followed by three overwater. You settle in somewhere grounded, find the house reef, and the overwater nights land better because you already know the island. It also usually costs around 15% less than five straight overwater nights.

Decision three: the house reef matters more than the villa

If you take one thing from this: choose the resort by its house reef. A swimmable reef straight off the beach gives you something to do every single day at no extra cost, and it is the single strongest predictor of how much couples enjoy the trip.

Decision four: meal plan

  • Half board suits most couples — lunch tends to be light after a morning in the water
  • Full all-inclusive is excellent value on remote islands where there is nowhere else to eat
  • Bed and breakfast only makes sense on the handful of islands with several independent restaurants

A five-night shape that works

  1. Day 1 — arrive, transfer, settle into the beach villa
  2. Day 2 — guided house reef snorkelling in the morning, nothing after
  3. Day 3 — move overwater, sunset dolphin cruise
  4. Day 4 — completely open, private sandbank dinner at sunset
  5. Day 5 — deliberately empty
  6. Day 6 — late breakfast, transfer out

Note the two empty days. They are not filler — they are the reason people come back from the Maldives actually rested.

Frequently asked

How many nights should a Maldives honeymoon be?
Four to six. Three works on a speedboat resort but feels tight with a seaplane. Beyond seven, most couples prefer to split across two islands or add Dubai or Sri Lanka.
Is the Maldives affordable for Indian couples?
More than its reputation suggests. Speedboat resorts in North and South Malé Atoll during the May to October green season can cost close to half of a peak-season seaplane property.
