Bali honeymoon guide: where to stay, how long, and what to skip

Bali is not one destination, and treating it as one is why so many honeymoons here end up feeling like a driving holiday. The island changes character every forty minutes, and the trick is picking two of its versions rather than trying to see all of them.

Pick two bases, not five

The structure that works almost every time is three nights inland followed by three or four on the coast. Ubud gives you the terraced, green, ceremonial Bali; the Bukit peninsula in the south gives you limestone cliffs, sunsets and better dinners.

Moving more than once costs you a day each time. Ubud to Uluwatu alone is two to two and a half hours in traffic.

Where to actually stay

• Ubud — for the valley villas, spas and waterfalls. Stay ten minutes out of town, not in it
• Uluwatu and the Bukit — cliffs, sunsets and quiet. The best second half for couples
• Sidemen — greener and emptier than Ubud, a good swap if you have been to Bali before
• Seminyak and Canggu — best restaurants, most crowded. Worth one evening, rarely worth staying

What to skip

Three things get booked constantly and disappoint just as often: the famous gate that has a two-hour queue and a mirror held under the lens, the jungle swings that are now a conveyor belt, and Nusa Penida as a day trip — it is a long, rough boat ride each way for about four hours on the island.

If a Bali photograph is famous, assume there are ninety people behind the camera. Go at six in the morning or do not go.

How long you need

Six nights is the minimum for two bases. Eight is comfortable. Ten lets you add the Gili Islands, which is the only extension we consistently recommend — it adds a genuine beach-island stretch that Bali itself does not really have.

When to go

April to October is dry season. September and early October are the sweet spot — the same weather as the July peak with noticeably fewer people. November to March is wetter but greener, and the rain usually arrives in the afternoon and clears by evening.
